While parents adhere to their cultural and religious beliefs, in order to make the best arrangements for their children, the rules are not hard and fast. Young adults may be allowed to date if they are not attached, if the person is within their religion and cast.

The whole situation may not be as you first suspected, it is not completely controlling and rigid. It does seem to be more for concern and helping your young adult find the correct life partner.

Indian couples are basically brought together by the same principles as Western Christian culture, to not be unequally yoked. In the Indian culture marriage is arranged based first on religion. Education and social standing play a part because they are believed to make the couple more compatible if they have them in common.

Young people in India seem to trust their parents unconditionally, and to a degree that we are not as familiar with here in the West. We are raising children to be free and independent thinkers about almost everything, and to make their own decisions based on such. This is the difference in cultural beliefs.

Young couples in India trust their parents to make the best choice for them, and there is no right or wrong answer, only what you believe in. There are time, a couple may not see their partner until the day of the wedding.

Arranged marriages in Indian culture are still done here in the West, however, it is more likely that the pair met prior to marrying, in fact, they may have chosen each other based on their parent’s suggestions.

Is is possible for an Indian to marry outside their race and culture, but most likely, the person they marry would have to be willing to change their own religious beliefs in order to be accepted by the family.
